The International Parrotlet Society's purpose is to promote interest and
education in parrotlets. This includes their care, reproduction, exhibition and
conservation. Parrotlet welfare is paramount in IPS' crusade, therefore, we have
formed a Parrotlet Placement Program to find caring, knowledgeable homes for
unwanted, abused and neglected parrotlets through our vast network of members .
Mission Statement
The International Parrotlet Society establishes the Parrotlet Placement
Program to attempt to secure placement of parrotlets needing permanent, alternative care with
it's qualified members.
The International Parrotlet Society (“IPS) is non-profit educational
organization organized under IRS Code 501(c)(3).
IPS is not a shelter, rescue or animal adoption agency.
IPS is willing to attempt to place parrotlets whose owners are unable or
unwilling to care for them with its members in order to provide good, permanent
homes.
The International Parrotlet Society is not responsible for placing all
parrotlets to which it is assigned although it will expend every effort to do
so.
The Donor understands and accepts all of IPS’ policies and procedures
with regard to placement of donated parrotlets.
Parrotlet Donor
 | The International Parrotlet Society secretary will be notified of
the need for alternative placement. |
 | The Donor will not be paid and relinquishes all rights to the parrotlet
available for adoption to the International Parrotlet Society. |
 | There will be no fee charged to the Donor. |
 | Information about the parrotlet will be posted on the IPS web-site
and published in the IPS journal. |
 | A "chain of contacts" will initiated starting with the
Caregiver living closest. |
 | The Donor will specify health, status (pet, breeder, etc.) and other data
about the parrotlet needing relocation. |
 | The Donor will work with IPS regarding transportation. |
 | If IPS is unable to secure a home within its membership, it will
refer the party to another parrot rescue organization, if available. |
Parrotlet Caregiver Requirements
 | Only IPS can adopt or foster parrotlets. IPS members
willing to accept birds will note such on their application and renewal forms. |
 | Caregivers adopt parrotlets "as is" with no guarantee as to
their health status. IPS is NOT responsible in the event an adopted
parrotlet becomes ill or carries an illness. |
 | Categories of commitment will include the following: pet, breeder,
breeder retiree or other. This information will be kept in a database and used when the
need for placement arises. |
 | IPS may charge a $10.00 adoption fee; only current IPS
members may adopt or foster parrotlets. |
 | Caregivers agree to follow the IPS Minimum Standards of Care. |
 | If, for any reason, the Caregiver is unable to keep the parrotlet, IPS
must be notified immediately for relocation. The Caregiver may NOT sell nor give
away the parrotlet. |
Special Considerations
 | Parrotlets will be placed in the environment most suited to their needs.
If the parrotlet is a tame pet, the Caregiver must keep it as a pet. Breeder birds will be
placed with responsible breeders. |
 | Parrotlets may be placed in temporary foster homes in emergency
situations until permanent placement can be found. |
 | Rare parrotlets, such as Yellow Face and Mexicans, will be placed in the
appropriate IPS Cooperative Breeding Program in accordance with it's rules and
regulations. Rare species will always be placed in Cooperative Breeding Programs even if
they had previously been kept as pets. |
International Parrotlet Society's
Minimum Standards of Care
 | Feed your parrotlet a healthy, varied diet on a daily basis including
pellets, seeds, nuts, vegetables, beans, fruits, grains and breads |
 | Clean water should always be available. Change water at least once daily. |
 | Learn what foods should be avoided such as salt, sugar, chocolate,
avocados and alcohol. |
 | Secure the services of a veterinarian certified or experienced with avian
clients. |
 | A well-bird examination and annual check ups should be given by a
qualified avian veterinarian. |
 | Quarantine any new bird(s) coming into your home for at least 45 days if
another bird(s) is already present. |
 | Have nails, beaks and flight feathers trimmed when needed. |
 | Keep your parrotlet away from smoke, toxic plants and fumes. |
 | Give your parrotlet exercise opportunities and time out of its cage
daily. |
 | Never leave parrotlets unsupervised with other pets or children. |
 | Never take parrotlets outside unless they are in a cage. Even a parrotlet
with clipped wings can still fly. |
 | Always travel with your parrotlet in a cage and secure with a seatbelt
when in the car. |
 | Provide a cage large enough to contain many toys and perches to allow
your parrotlet ample room to exercise. A recommended MIMIMUM is 18" wide x 18"
deep and 24" high. Maximum bar spacing is ˝". |
 | Provide enrichment items and rotate them on a regular basis to alleviate
boredom. Also, check them often to make sure they are not damaged and are safe. |
 | Clean cage, perches and toys regularly and change cage papers daily. Food
and water dishes should be scrubbed daily as well. |
